Craig's Gauntlet Final Day! Popeye

The Invincible Hero       Seafaring        Father

With that combination of words how could I NOT draw Popeye!?!?!?!  He's a fun one to draw and I think I may have to draw him some more, get the proportions a little better.  But there ya go, Popeye!  Enjoy!

P.S.  If you want to see Popeye done right head over to the site of the incomparable Gary Dumm at dummart.com.

Craig's Gauntlet Day 4: Sir Steven the Cook

Today's challenge:

The Knight Templar     Refugee     Chef

This one is a bit of a stretch but if you have watched the Steven Seagal movie "Under Siege" you will get at least the chef/cook part.  The refugee part, kinda left that out.

Ben Continues the Gauntlet! Day 4

So I got a little carried away with 1 aspect of today's challenge and focused solely on the Knight Templar part.  I originally planned on incorporating the other aspects in the background, but that didn't happen.  My time was limited, so I did what I could.

The whole thing was done in Manga Studio.  I tried out some of the paint brushes.  Really enjoyed them.

Craig's Gauntlet Day 3: Careers in Science

GAUNTLET DAY 3

The Outlaw     Young     Mad Scientist

Fun with a ballpoint pen and Mad Science.

Ben Runs The RBMC Gauntlet! Day 3

I had to skip day 2.  The Hale household is in the midst of a baby sleeping rescheduling that is not going well.  With that in mind, I wanted to continue the gauntlet and jump back in on day 3.  So here is a quicky sketch knocked together on my lunch break.  The day's theme was:

The Outlaw  /  Young  /  Mad Scientist

This was the first thing that popped in my head.  I would have loved to refine it, but am happy that I'm at least sketching again.

Ben Brings You Penguins!

Wow. It has been a while since I have put paint to canvas. If I'm being honest, it has been a while since I've drawn anything. The Rust Belt Monsters and I descended upon Cleveland's Brite Winter Festival with another mural. We hadn't done a traditional, painted one since Ingenuity Fest so it was good to be back. I kept my contribution small as I was feeling the rust (pun intended) but I ended up happy with it. I'm looking forward to the next event and some bigger projects this year.

Craig's Day 2 : Usagi!!!

Today's random word and phrases is:

The Reckless     Marooned      Sensei

It's funny, I'm finding these random words are stirring up very specific stories.  The first one, "Treasure Island", this one the Legend of Miyamoto Musashi and the duel with "The Demon of the Western Provinces".  You can find the full story here.  Essentially the story goes that Musashi traveled Japan finding teachers and swordsmen of renown to test his skills as a samurai.  The long and short of it is he challenges a swordsman, this 'Demon", to a duel on an island.  He makes the Demon wait, making him angry that he had been disrespected and about the time he was blinded by his anger.  Musashi shows up, does not draw his sword  but instead brandishes an oar from his boat, further disrespecting the swordsman, and kills the Demon.
So why is he a rabbit?  Cause I wasn't the only one inspired by the story of Musashi, The amazing Stan Sakai created this amazing character, Usagi Yojimbo who is a combination of the great Samurai movies and the story of Musashi.  You should check it out!

Craig's Gauntlet Day 1 - Treasure Island!

My take on today's Gauntlet,
The Evil Mentor      Armed       Space Marine,
Space Long John Silver from, "Treasure Island".  Sure Disney did "Treasure Planet"  but this grouping of words and phrases made it IMPOSSIBLE not to make the connection.

If you would like some description of what the heck the gauntlet is check out our Facebook page !  If not, tune in again tomorrow for more random sketches!

Ben Enters The Gauntlet! Day 1

Day 1 of the Rust Belt Monster Collective: Gauntlet has begun and I wanted to knock this out quick. The theme was "The Evil Mentor Armed Space Marine".  I Sketched quickly in Manga Studio, continued in that program for inking, and then brought it into Photoshop for some quick color.  Going to try and keep with this scheme through the week.  We'll see how it goes.  Bring on Day 2!

Dragons Love Donuts

I'd probably have a pet dragon too if I could not eat all the donuts myself.

Thwipp!

Who doesn't love a comic book crossover? Not me. Anyway, this piece was drawn for a comic book pinup show happening at Breakneck Gallery in Lakewood, OH; this coming Saturday (Feb 21st).

This lil' doodle was drawn digitally, using photoshop, but the the piece hanging in the show was printed on paper toned using tea, which created a very cool vintage magazine pinup look to the print. If your in the neighborhood, come check it out.

Tim the Enchanter

This portrait is both WAY late and WAY early.
After last week's Rust Belt post on birthdays I remembered I hadn't yet finished my portrait of Tim!  So here it is.  I have been inspired by Tim's work long before we started the RBMC.  Ever since seeing his work at Doctor Sketchy he was one of the reasons I came back every month, someone to marvel at and someone to push me to draw better!  He still does that weather he knows or not.  As one of the new Doctors at Doctor Sketchy Cleveland not only does he inspire but supplies a jungle gym for the rest of Cleveland to learn on.
He's an amazing guy with an amazing talent and a friend I wish everyone to have: honest, level headed and always there when you need him.

Happy WAY late and WAY early Birthday Tim!!

Boop Boop be RARRRRRRR!

Inspired by our pals over at Scribble Nerds I came up with this monstrosity!  Their topic was mermaid but they didn't specify which end had to be fish!  This lovely little lady is part Marilyn Monroe and part Dunkleosteus - Terrelli.  What's that? Just a huge, armor plated fish from the Devonian era.  Enjoy!

V-Day

Finished the inks for a print to be released in the near future just in time for Valentines Day! Mortal enemies hugging? I assure you I drew no inspiration from my dating career for this piece. Not one bit.
