Ben's Week In Review

Tuesday has come back around and I am without any real finished product to show.  I spent most of my time working on smaller projects and some video work.  But because of my crushing fear of being the first Monster to miss his day of the week, I've decided to make my post about a bunch of little things from the past week.

First off, last Friday I participated in the live drawing event for the Crunch: Sugary Art gallery opening.  Above, you will see a very deranged Sunny the Cuckoo Bird which I painted as a part of the mural.  I actually didn't know what his name was when I was drawing him.  A little research and I have now educated us both.  Your welcome.

I also continued my long standing dream of getting a working prototype of my game up and running.  With the help of the Scirra forums, I was able to get my helpless Non-Player Characters (NPC's) to fall (potentially) to their deaths.  Pretty thrilling.  Next up, figuring out how to get them to lay down when they're hurt.

"Help!"
The last couple of days were spent working on a video project in After Effects.  While the whole thing was pretty standard editing slide shows, it did remind me of a time when I used to spend quite a lot of time in the program.

And finally, my fellow Monsters and I have decided that this month's challenge will be a tribute to giant robots and monsters.  At the moment, I'm leaning towards Gamera v. Voltron (Card Subject to Change)

Early sketch for potential Gamera vs Voltron piece.

Misery Jackals!!

It's not every day you get the opportunity to work for a band you like and that band being a punk bluegrass band,  well that's about as rare as seeing a Sasquatch, and that's what they asked me to draw!!!!!!!  Well a Skunk Ape, the Southern Sasquatch, but you get the idea.  I've been really lucky as of late.  This piece, done in ink with crow quill, is soon to be plastered on walls and on shirts all over the place because the Misery Jackals are going on TOUR!  Do yourself a favor, check them out here: themiseryjackals.com to find tour dates, music and merch!  (Probably going to be able to find these shirts on their site very soon)

Round 39: Giant Robots vs. Colossal Monsters!

We here at the R.B.M.C. are right in the middle of a very busy summer but not too busy to draw up some Gargantuan Robots and Colossal Monsters!  From Johnny Sokko and Gigantor to Big Guy and Pacific Rim,  Godzilla and King Kong to Cloverfield if it's giant and has ever risked stubbing a toe on the Sears Tower we love it!  So join us in July's stomp through the internet.  Enjoy!

BAYarts 2013

The 2013 BAYarts Art & Music Festival was a few weeks back. There the Rust Belt Monster Collective painted this mural, with the help of our monster squad of interns: Grace Harms, Emily Neroni, and Nate Overlow.  Like our other murals, prints are on the way, and video of the event over at the main site soon!

Crunchy Bikini Killer

Hey pals, Randy here, this is my print for our pal Angela Oster's art show; Crunchy:Sugary Cartoon Art For Big Kids.

Since I've been focusing on RBMC events and freelance work, I've been doing less for art shows.  While the initial drawing started out as a sketchbook piece ignited by a Dr. Sketchy:Akron session, all the embellishments are representations of what I've been doing in lieu of gallery work.  You'd have to ask a therapist why the bloods in there, I'm not going to try.

I also wanted this to be a response to a piece from a couple of years back that ignited the current arc of  work.

This is an Adobe Illustrator print from a show I curated called: Easy, Breezy, Beautiful; a little over two years ago. There was a fair amount of overlap of artists in both shows, and I wanted to publicly show the progress I've made by working in Illustrator almost every day for the past year.  While it's easy to put older work down, I think it's important to revisit them so you can see how far you've come. It's why I keep every sketchbook and why this print still hangs in my apartment.

We're still in the process of putting up a full RBMC store at the main site, and I'll be offering prints of both images soon. In the meantime I put the Bikini Killer image on a shirt over at Red Bubble , and we'll have die cut stickers of the image at our Live Events.

We'll be posting images from our live mural from the show throughout the week, so keep an eye out for that.

Stay cool, kids.

I can be soft an cuddly

Just to prove to fellow RBMCer Erin Schechtman, I decide to post these two pieces. It is perhaps one of my favorite events I've ever been involved in. I'm an animal lover...and these were done for The Ripple Project. An online call to arms spearheaded by artist Kelly Light. An event to raise money for the animals..helpless victims, of of the tragic BP oil disaster. Sitting watching the bideo feed on CNN as millions of crude pumped and spewed into the Gulf...I was angered and felt I wanted to do something. And then I found Kelly's project. These were auctioned off, online...the purchaser had to donate money to any of the 3 or 4 charities to help these beautiful creatures. I, in return shipped them to the client. These were done in marker, colored pencil and pen/ ink. By far they are still to this day, some of my favorite works. See Erin...I can be soft and cuddly.

Friday night (tomorrow), Arts Collinwood Gallery is putting on a comic book themed show, "CRUNCHY: Sugary Cartoon Art for Big Kids", this is my piece for it.

Not only is it going to be an awesome show filled with tons of great art from a plethora of fantastic artists but, your very own RBMC will be creating a mural live at the show!

So if you're in the Cleveland area, come out and see us tomorrow night.
